| Case Status: Open |
| Date Deceased: 2/17/04 |
Circumstances: A Gadsden County School District bus driver noticed something not quite right about a vehicle on the side of the road: a man was slumped over and the motor was running. The driver didn't stop but called the bus garage to report that something was amiss. A few minutes later someone from the garage called the Gadsden County Sheriff to tell them they needed to send someone to take a look. When deputies arrived they found a small sport utility vehicle on the shoulder of the road. A man was slumped over inside. It was Melvin Northern, dead from what appeared to be shotgun wounds. It was his 24th birthday. The bus driver first noticed the 1992 Chevrolet Jimmy around 6:30 a.m. and blew the horn. Thirty minutes later on the return trip the driver also noticed the driver's side door was open and the headlights were on.
