A 33-year-old Chattahoochee man, Cedric Goodson, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after he shot a man late Monday night. Goodson then led deputies on a high-speed chase through the southwestern part of Gadsden County and part of Liberty County. Goodson was shot by a Gadsden County deputy after he refused to surrender and drop a 9mm weapon he was carrying.
According to Sheriff Morris Young, this is what happened: earlier Monday night Goodson's former girlfriend called a male friend because she needed to talk to someone about "some things that were going on in her life." When the woman and her friend returned to her residence, Goodson was sitting in a parked car in the yard. "He got out, walked up to the car and started shooting," Young said. The 49- year-old victim, whose name was not released, put his arm up in a defensive manner. The bullet struck him in the lower arm. Goodson, believing he had killed the man, left the scene as deputies arrived. "We followed him, sometimes at a high rate of speed, into Liberty County and back into Gadsden County before he crashed into a small clump of trees near his home," Young said. "We tried to talk him out of the car and we made numerous attempts to get him to throw down the weapon and surrender.
The standoff lasted about an hour. He finally got out of the car, but he was waving the gun around saying he wanted us to kill him because he couldn't spend the rest of his life in prison," Young said. Fearing for the safety of bystanders, Goodson was shot in the lower back by a deputy to disable him. He was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a gunshot and is listed in stable condition. The victim was treated for a gunshot to the arm and has been released from the hospital. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is completed.
